What is Paper-Based, Disposable Devices for Microbial and Chemical Detection about?
Paper is an advantageous material for construction of portable and fieldable analytical devices because it is inexpensive, easily engineered, biocompatible, sterilizable, hydrophilic, disposable, combustible, biodegradable, can be functionalized for specific properties and readily processed (cut, folded, imprinted, stamped, infused with reagents, etc.) for manufacture of diagnostic devices • The ideal paper-based diagnostic device meets World Health Organization (WHO) "ASSURED" criteria and is Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and Robust, Equipment-free and Deliverable. Expanded "REASSURED" criteria include Real-time connectivity and Ease of sample collection • Paper-based analytical devices are not a new concept. Modern devices can trace their lineage back to the late 1930s-1940s and Pliny the Elder described a papyrus-based spot test for chemical adulteration of verdigris almost 2000 years ago • Although the use of paper as a platform for diagnostic tests has ancient roots, paper-based tests are now undergoing a resurgence driven by incorporation of modern manufacturing, functionalization and sensing or detection approaches
