and her husband on loist, and Alicia and three of her brothers, who live down the street, happened to be there. Mary Ann and the other Catholic Worker girls had all, in the year before, been married, and were no longer running their center and camp for the kids. The heat accentuates the other unpleasant aspects of life in the slums, as a new color can accentuate the other colors of a painting. The odors and the dirt and the sickness and the crowded conditions are all intensi- fied, deepened, given a new dimension by the heat, and the heat itself is intensified and strengthened in return. There was no breeze, and therefore no "air conditioning." There was no rain, and therefore no cooling spray, like the one that so pleas- antly comes from sprinklers set on lawns in summer. There were, of course, no lawns. There was only the street, and its spray was the dust.
