Klystrons produce microwave power far more than solid state devices and are used from UHF to hundreds of gigahertz in applications such as radar, satellites, communication broadcasting, medicine, and particle accelerators. At SLAC, klystrons are routinely used that have outputs of 50 megawatts at pulse power and 50 kilowatts of time-averaged power at frequencies close to 3 GHz. A company also uses a klystron to convert hydrocarbons into natural gas and diesel fuel.
