Charlemagne was a Frankish king who conquered the Avars, created the Spanish March, and massacred Saxons. His army was later ambushed by Basques at Roncevaux Pass. He promoted education and culture at his capital of Aachen under the scholar Alcuin of York. On Christmas Day 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as the first Holy Roman Emperor.
