What is History and Use of Merkins about?

Merkin referred to a pubic wig worn in the 17th century, originally derived from the name of an untidy woman. Pubic wigs were used to cover syphilis sores and baldness caused by mercury treatments, or to comply with laws prohibiting full nudity. Reasons for wearing merkins included curing syphilis by shaving pubic hair, hiding sores from promiscuity, treating syphilis with mercury which caused baldness, embarrassment from a lack of pubic hair, and removing lice by shaving all body hair including pubic hair.
