What is The Impact of Race and Mammographic Detection in Early Breast Cancer about?
Materials/Methods: From 1985 through 2004, 580 sequential women with 601 T0-2 N0-1 breast cancers underwent radiation treatment as part of breast-conserving therapy for stage 0, I, and II breast cancer at a single institution. Surgical margins were prospectively assessed in all patients and used to guide radiation therapy dose and technique. A positive surgical margin was defined as tumor involving the inked edge of a specimen. A close margin was defined as any evidence of invasive or in-situ disease within 2 mm of an inked specimen margin. A negative surgical margin was defined as no invasive or in-situ disease within 2 mm of any inked margin. The surgical method for intraoperative frozen section margin assessment has been previously described (1). All positive and close margins were re-excised when feasible. Charts were reviewed to determine the specific reason for a persistent close or positive margin. Results: After initial definitive surgery, margins were close, positive, or unknown in 219 (37%) of the 601 cases. After re-excision in 170 cases, only 53 (9%) cases had a final positive or close margin. Twenty-one (39%) patients could not tolerate a re-excision for technical reas
