What is On the Iterative Use of the Particle MK about?

IN translating the lament over his bad name of the "Man Weary of Life" (11. 86-103) several translators, notably Scharff, Blackman, Junker, and Wilson, took the second mk of each stanza to be the preposition m-'.k, hence: "Behold, my name will reek through thee" (Wilson, ANET, p. 406), while others, e.g. Erman, Weill, and Faulkner, regarded the second mk as a repetition of the first, whence Faulkner rendered: "Behold, my name is detested / Behold, more than the smell of vultures .. ." 1 Faulkner reasoned that "there is nothing to show that the soul was in any way responsible for the man's condition." Faulkner's rendering, however, has not been generally accepted. Williams in his "Reflections on the Lebensmiide" (JEA, 48 [1962], 49-56) reverted to: "Lo, my name reeks through you," and now Barta, in the most recent study of the text, gives "Siehe mein Name wird anriichig sein durch dich."2 It seems to me that an examination of the iterative use of the particle mk will settle the matter in favor of Faulkner's rendering. This iterative use is not treated in the grammars, and only Lefebvre cites two examples in which mk introduces two successive sentences: (1) mk irrt.sn pw r shtyw.sn .
