William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He had little formal education but became a highly successful playwright and poet in London in the late 16th century. His plays were performed by the acting company he was a part owner of and he was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.
