What is Two-centre exchange interactions between orbitally degenerate ions. II. Two ions in orbitally degenerate states about?

## Abstract The semiempiric theory of anisotropic exchange interactions developed earlier within the framework of the strong crystal field scheme is applied to describe pair exchange interactions between orbitally degenerate transition metal ions lying on a fourfold axis and having approximately O~h~ site symmetries. The effective Hamiltonians, with orbitally dependent parts expressed in terms of ficitious orbital moments, are obtained for all possible combinations of orbitally degenerate states (doublet–doublet, doublet–triplet, and triplet–triplet). These include relatively small numbers of anisotropic exchange parameters which can be estimated from the values of isotropic exchange parameters. The theory described is compared with experiment.
