Four theater companies from Anhui arrived in Beijing in 1790 and their styles came to replace the pre-eminent Kunqu Opera style. This new style became known as Peking Opera. Peking Opera encompasses drama and styles of acting and emphasizes historical, military plays and patriotism. Regional opera styles still exist across China with over 300 listed, including Cantonese Opera, Hebei Clapper Opera, and Yue Opera.
