General Ibrahim Babangida is a Nigerian general and statesman who served as military president of Nigeria from 1985 to 1993. He rose through the ranks of the Nigerian army, fighting in the civil war. He was involved in several military coups in Nigeria, including the 1983 coup where he overthrew the democratically elected government and installed himself as head of state. As president, he consolidated power and ruled Nigeria until stepping down in 1993.
