Equally noticeable is the fact that the three works shared the same motivation. They claimed to offer a pedagogical approach to the fine science of poetry, either in an amusing way, in the anonymous Traité, or through a virtuoso conceptualization, in L'instructif. As is convincingly argued in the introductions, their main goal was to legitimate vernacular poetry as a part of rhetoric and to shed new light on rhyme, the French verses' distinguishing characteristic. Their ambition, explicit in L'instructif, was to define a new Parnassus that included recent French-speaking writers, from Alain Chartier to George Chastelain. The books promoted the development of French literature and the recognition of its "modern classics." But rather than trying to define what poetry was, as the sixteenth-century theoreticians would later do, the three authors promoted a practical and technical approach; they apparently considered the science of verse as a valuable sociocultural expertise to be widely disseminated and cultivated.
