1) Crack-free and homogeneous hybrid silica sol-gel coatings around 1 micron thick were deposited on glass slides and austempered ductile iron (ADI) substrates via dip coating. 2) Multilayer coatings up to 4 microns thick could be achieved on glass but not on ADI, as additional layers cracked upon densification. 3) Preliminary corrosion tests showed the sol-gel coatings improved the corrosion resistance of ADI in NaCl solutions.
