Fort Granger was constructed between March and May 1863 by Union troops stationed in Franklin to protect the city from Confederate attack. The earthen fort was 781 feet long, 346 feet wide and enclosed 11.76 acres. It had dirt walls reinforced with timber and weapons embrasures. By April it contained 18 field guns and two siege cannons and could house over 5,000 troops. The fort was designed and built under the supervision of Captain William Merrill and took approximately 10 weeks and thousands of laborers
