Haem Catabolism and Bilirubin Metabolism by Vatha Na is a document available to read on EtoBox.

What is Haem Catabolism and Bilirubin Metabolism about?

The catabolism of haem occurs through three main steps: 1. Heme is broken down to biliverdin in red blood cells by heme oxygenase. Biliverdin is then reduced to unconjugated bilirubin. 2. Unconjugated bilirubin binds to albumin and is transported to the liver. Liver cells take up bilirubin via membrane receptors. 3. In liver cells, bilirubin is conjugated with glucuronic acid by glucuronyl transferase. The resulting conjugated bilirubin is secreted into bile.
