Rizal entered Ateneo de Manila in 1872 after passing the entrance exam at the College of San Juan de Letran. However, the registrar refused to admit him due to being late for registration and being sickly. With help from Xerez Burgos, nephew of Father Burgos, Rizal was admitted. The Jesuits at Ateneo used a rigorous discipline-based system with religious instruction and a competition between boarding students ("internos") and non-boarding students ("externos") to motivate students.
