What is Marx against the Marxists : the Christian humanism of Karl Marx about?
Apart from the history of philosophy, nowhere do we find more varied and differing interpretations of the term “materialism” than in the ranks of Marxists. It would not serve our purpose here to list and group these interpretations, documenting each with quotations from more or less well-known Marxist authors or Marxist parties around the world. Even a mere description of the status quaestionis would constitute a book as large as the present one. But it would not help us to construct a unifying criterion or to eliminate the existing confusion. A more direct and solid way to tackle the question is to show in gradual steps what Marx himself did not mean by materialism. If this seemingly negative method helps us to trim away some of the more frequent interpretations of the tent) “materialism,” then our effort will be fruitful. Of course, the passages introduced in the course of this work will also put us on the track of what Marx himself understood by materialism. From a methodological standpoint, however, there is no use in ascertaining the latter if we do not use it to counteract unfounded or untenable interpretations.
