What is Distinct contribution of interneuronal circuits in the human motor cortex during interlimb interactions: A transcranial magnetic stimulation study about?
Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is one of the noninvasive brain stimulation methods to modulate neural activity by applying a weak electric current. Previous studies confirmed that cognitive functions can be improved by applying tACS using a stimulation frequency related to a cognitive function, e.g., 40 Hz (Santarnecchi et al., 2016; Hoy et al., 2015), but no investigations have been carried out to see the impact of tACS using an individualized stimulation frequency related to a specific cognitive task. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether an individualized tACS can enhance cognitive functions in terms of the stimulation frequency. To confirm the effect of individualized tACS, 15 participants took part in the experiment twice on two different days for actual individualized tACS and sham tACS conditions, respectively. An individualized stimulation frequency was found using the electroencephalography (EEG) data measured while the subjects performed a mental arithmetic (MA) task before the individualized tACS; the individualized stimulation frequency was selected for the frequency showing the strongest power in the alpha band closely related to the MA
