What is Understanding Repulsion Motors: Operation & Torque about?
A repulsion motor has a field coil connected to AC power and shorted brushes offset from the field axis by 15-25 degrees. This induces current in the armature which opposes the field, producing rotation. Speed can be controlled by adjusting brush position relative to the field. It has superior commutation below synchronous speed due to low starting current producing high starting torque but inferior commutation above synchronous speed.
