In shock compression experiments, metals are compressed to hundreds of kilobars and heated to thousands of degrees. As a result of this heating electrons can be excited into states well above the 0°K Fermi energy. In this paper we study some of the effects that empty but low lying electron bands have on the measured pressure of metals at high temperatures. The effects discussed in this paper are quite general. As an illustration of the part these bands can play at high temperatures it is shown that the surprisingly low pressures measured along the Rb shock compression curve are due to the presence of low lying d like bands. On compression at 0°K these bands would eventually cross the Fermi surface resulting in an electronic transition similar to the one found in Cesium. However the high temperatures in shock experiment allows the electrons to be excited into these d bands at lower compressions and effectively anticipate this transition.
