What is Industrial Applications and Implications of Biofilms about?

Biofilms are transitory adherent microbial communities, which develop on immersed surfaces in aquatic environments. The biofilm develops as a heterogeneous unit composed of organic and inorganic entities as well as microorganisms, namely algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and larvae of invertebrate organisms . Biofilm formation at water-pipeline interface of cooling water distribution systems results in reduction of heat transfer efficiency and reduction of water flow, thus adversely affecting the operation of industrial units . The anisotropic nature of bacterial biofilms can result in spatial variations on pipeline surfaces of metal substratum resulting in the formation of electrochemical corrosion cells. This process subsequently propagates and manifests into microbially induced corrosion (MIC) . Generally, biofilms constitute a distinct growth phase of microorganisms that are markedly different from the planktonic microbiota. During the adhesion process, bacterial cells undergo phenotypic changes in response to surface proximity. In the course of biofilm formation, the sessile bacteria form microcolonies, which are in juxtaposition with cells of the same species. The microenvi
