About 5 years ago, I read Mark Fisher’s ‘Capitalist Realism’. For me there was a profound question and an enormous challenge at the heart of this book: how do we create alternatives?The book you hold is a step in thinking a response. In the last four years I began to look for a model to present this response. I looked at the writing styles of Descartes’ ‘Discourses’, Plato’s middle dialogues, Montaigne’s essays, ‘pataphysics, Queneau’s ‘Exercises’, Perec’s experiments, the OULIPO, Diderot’s ‘Jacques’, Spinoza’s ‘Ethics’, Borges’ fictions and Dante’s ‘Commedia’. It was out of years of experiments that I found that Montaigne’s writing, as a site of effort, of trying things out, struck a chord with me. But instead of the essay form, could I use a conversational, dramatic form, a form I had developed through my own studies over a thirty year period? Given the importance of conversation in all of our lives, the art of writing a conversation would seem natural and unproblematic. The truth is there is a real craft here.
