What is A NOTE ON THE KARYOTYPE OF PROECHIMYS GUAIRAE (RODENTIA : HYSTRICOMORPHA) about?

Les auteurs confirment le nombre diploide de 46 chromosomes accorde P. guairae mais ils constatent des differences avec les donnees de Reig, concernant les chromosomes sexuels et Parrangement de certains autosomes. Reig et al. (1970) have reported diploid chromosome numbers of 2n = 26 and 2n = 46 for two populations of Proechimys guayannensis in Venezuela. These forms were previously considered to be subspecies P. guayannensis guayannensis and P. guayannensis guairae but because of the great difference between their chromosome complements, Reig et al (1970) suggested that each should be given species status. Thus, the specimens which had 26 chromosomes were called P. cherriei and those with 46 were named P. guairae. Isomorphic sex chromosomes were found in the male karyotype of both of these species, although Reig et at. (1970) reported a personal communication from Patton and Gardner who found heteromorphic sex chromosomes in a Peruvian species of Proechimys. The colony of Proechimys at the Wellcome Institute of Comparative Physiology in London was caught at Ocumare, Aragua Ο and was considered to be identical to P. guairae of Reig et al. (1970). Good chromosome spreads were obtai
