This is a massive and important work of scholarship. There has long been a need for a new study of religious life in the Comnenian period, which the author chooses to extend beyond its normal chronological boundaries (1082-1185) to include the Nicene period and thus to 1261. The author knows the period and the relevant modern scholarship very thoroughly and has worked on both for many years. Written sources, not archaeological ones, provide the bulk of his material.
