What is Session 11: Biomaterials - Metals about?
Amongst all metals, titanium alloys are the most suitable materials for applications in osteosynthesis or implant technology due to well-balanced mechanical properties. In addition, titanium shows excellent corrosion resistance and non-toxicity which can be explained by a thin titanium oxide layer on the surface of titanium parts. During surgery, due to inflammatory reactions after implantation or due to fretting, the oxide layer of implants might be damaged so that metal ions can infiltrate the blood circuit. Alloys currently used in medical engineering are CP-Titanium Grades 1, 2 and 4, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb. Although titanium alloys exhibit excellent properties compared to other implant materials like cobalt based alloys or stainless steels, disadvantages exist also. Recently, the use of some typical alloying elements, i.e. vanadium and aluminum, was intensively discussed because of their potential negative effects on health. It is well known that vanadium as well as its oxides are cytotoxic.
