This study compared the effectiveness of 4 oral analgesics for acute extremity pain in the emergency department: ibuprofen and acetaminophen, oxycodone and acetaminophen, hydrocodone and acetaminophen, and codeine and acetaminophen. It found no statistically significant differences in pain reduction between the treatments after 2 hours. The largest difference in pain reduction was between hydrocodone and oxycodone, but this was still less than the minimum clinically important difference.
