But they must be real placebos, which means that they must be pharmacologically inert. Unless, of course, Dr Fielding is implying that it is the doctor who should be taking active drugs, rather than the patient. It is a relief to be able to end on a concordant note. I quite agree that "tnsumetent attention has been paid to the study of the ... placebo response". Future researchers might interest themselves not only in inert tablets, liquids and injections, but also in those who prescribe them. Whether we like it or not, we are all walking placebos.
