The AC-polarographic determination of the chloride ion concentration suggests, that butyltin chlorides are completely dissociated in aqueous solution within the concentration ranges of the polarographic method. By means of pH-measurements of the alkyltin ions primarily formed by BuSnCl,, Bu,SnCl, and Bu,SnCl their complete hydrolysis in the concentration range up to 1 x 10B4 M was established. The reduction potentials of the organotin halides move towards more negative values in all investigated electrolytes corresponding to the decreasing polarity with increasing degree of substitution. Parallel to an increase in polarizability the potentials are shifted to more positive values when the chain lengths of the substituents of alkyltin derivatives increase, corresponding to a more facile reduction.
