The recent publication of G. John Ikenberry's Reasons of&ate: Oil Politics and the Capacities of American Government and Franklin Tugwell's The Energy Crisis and the American Political Economy: Politics and Markets in the Management of Natural Resources allows a comparison of two extensively researched and theoretically informed accounts of the American political response to the oil crisis. The two different characterizations of the oil crisis further provide an opportunity to assess a recent example of the statist fiterature measured against a pluralist view of democratic politics.
