What is Winter Weather in War Poetry about?

The poem describes the miserable conditions soldiers faced in the trenches during winter in World War I. It states that what the soldiers fear most is not the enemy or combat, but rather the cold, rain, and thick mud they must endure. The freezing temperatures, pouring rain, and porridgy mud that comes up to their knees makes conducting war far more difficult than battling enemies. The poem asserts that the true hardships of war come from enduring the miserable weather conditions of rain, cold, and mud.
