## BOOK REVIEWS 195 major, but often controversial or difficult, monuments of Roman Provence must to some degree detract from the stature and contribution of this otherwise important and impressive volume. For a thorough knowledge of the topography, archaeology, and monuments of Gallia Narbonensis we must either turn to the complex bibliography of Provencal archaeology or to such earlier (and sometimes flawed) syntheses as those by Olwen Brogan or Paul MacKendrick (both long out of print). Or we must await another book that will concentrate on the major sites and monuments of Gallia Narbonensis and attempt to synthesize controversial material. Perhaps Rivet could be induced to write such a companion volume; in the meantime, for an up-to-date overview that mentions at least some of these ongoing controversies, there is now available Anthony King's Roman Gaul and Germany (Los Angeles 1990), which does briefly cover some of these controversies surrounding major Provencal monuments, though its scope is too broad to provide much detail.
