The document discusses the history and origins of the Indian national flag. It began as a quest in 1883 to have a rallying symbol to drive out British rule. Early designs for an Indian flag were proposed in 1905 and 1906 before Mahatma Gandhi popularized a version in 1916-1947 with bands of saffron, white and green and a charkha or Ashoka Chakra centered on the white band. This design was finally adopted as the national flag of India in 1947 following independence.
