The simplicity and convenience of hair hygrographs makes them popular even among research workers, particularly in the biological field, but they are often employed in ignorance of the inherent errors. Apart from errors due to the behaviour of the hair, linkages used to convert the change of hair length to a pen movement may also produce errors. Errors from both sources are described. Saturated salt solutions provide a simple and reliable means of calibrating hygrometers and hygrographs. Details are given of apparatus and procedure in using this method, and of some problems encountered.
