What is Understanding Ashcan Comics about?
An ashcan comic is a comic book produced primarily to establish trademarks on titles rather than for sale. In the 1930s-1940s, comic book publishers would quickly produce small runs of comics, sometimes just the cover, with recycled or unfinished artwork to submit to the US Patent and Trademark Office to secure trademarks, as trademark law at the time required a published work. These "ashcan comics" served little other purpose since they had low production quality and small print runs of only a few copies.
