What is Adonais about?
Adonais a young Dominican Friar is a man who transcends cultural boundaries. Despite living within a background of growing sectarian tension and violence he stands as a symbol of love and reconciliation, his broken but healed past a sign to the shattered society around him. The novel follows his journey from the tip of the Iberian Peninsula, through a mystical encounter in the Alpujarra, to Islamic and Jewish Gharnata as the tide of tolerance is turning against the Christian Kingdoms to the North. He shares the journey north from Gharnata to Christian Jaen with his Jewish childhood friend Miriam and many of the tensions and ambiguities of their adult relationship are faced and resolved on their journey to her mysterious forest community near Jaen. Many gather for Miriam’s hope-filled wedding in the forest but the tension increases as the focus switches to Sevilla and the terrible massacres of June 1391. The novel is a brave and insightful analysis of the theme of true spirituality standing against religious sectarianism; and champions the power of a real love that can transcend the brokenness of lives destroyed by violence and hate.
