What is Giraudoux : Three Faces of Destiny about?
This is the first book in English to deal exclusively with Jean Giraudouxs plays. Author Cohen demonstrates that Giraudoux remains a writer for our time and presents him, not as the dilettante we too frequently see, but as a profound thinker and an engaged, deeply committed writer. Numerous quotations from Giraudouxs political writings, in most cases translated for the first time, emphasize and document the seriousness of his concerns. This work is an attempt to analyze and evaluate the plays of Giraudoux, whose popularity in this country has not yet been accompanied by an appropriate critical interest, according to Cohen. While there is no attempt on the authors part to maintain that Giraudoux was a great original philosopher, it is his intent to show that Giraudouxs very stylized works are underlaid by an intellectual system at least as profound as those of dramatists more ostentatiously thoughtful, such as Sartre, Beckett, or Brecht. The author has organized the plays according to the ideas which he has found roughly central to them, and presents them in three categories, four plays in The Sexual Plays, The Metaphysical Plays, and The Political Plays.
