## Preface My first book -The Idea of Higher Education (1990) -was an attempt to institute the philosophy of higher education as a definite field of study. Each of its chapters deliberately marked out points in the field deserving of serious attention, one of which was entitled simply 'Culture' . That was unusual then and has, in many ways, remained so, with its implication that universities and higher education might have cultural purpose(s). Indeed, Bill Readings, in his influential (1997) book, The University in Ruins, observed that the university had abandoned culture and had become -we may say -a post-cultural institution. My sense is that -as the second quarter of the twenty-first century approaches -this is a particularly opportune moment to attend to culture and the university, and to see whether some kind of cultural purpose(s) can be gleaned. On a number of fronts, the world of higher education seems to be becoming more sensitive to matters of culture (the presence of culture wars, the cultures of the Global South as worthy of attention and the responses of different cultures to global crises), and yet the world is also experiencing increasing cultural fragmentation.
