What is Dialogic Education: Tensions and Dilemmas about?
All approaches to dialogic education involve engaging in dialogue and include the goal of students getting better at learning through dialogue so a broad definition of dialogic education is: education for dialogue as well as education through dialogue. However, different traditions have different understandings of what dialogue is and how best to teach it. This chapter introduces the idea of dialogic education, offers a brief history of some of the traditions of educational thought leading to this, outlines some major contemporary approaches to implementing dialogic education and summarises research on the impact of dialogic education. Finally, some tensions and dilemmas in the field of dialogic education are explored with a view to suggesting how the field might develop in the future.
