Abstract\_A systematic study of compound formation in the system Nb2O5-V2O5 was attempted, by using amorphous materials prepared by the simultaneous hydrolysis of niobium and vanadyl alkoxides. Four compounds exist in this system: 23Nb2O5.2V2O5, 9Nb2O5.V2O5 9Nb2O5.2V2O5, and Nb2O5.V2O5, (NbVO5). Solid solutions of δ-Nb2O5 were formed up to 10 mol% V2O5 at low temperatures. The transformation of the δto γ-Nb2O5 (ss), γ-toα'-Nb2O5, (ss), and α'to α-Nb2O5 (ss) occurred at elevated temperatures. The compounds 23Nb2O5.2V2O5 (monoclinic) and 9Nb2O5.V2O5 (tetragonal) were formed by the transformation of α-Nb2O5, solid solutions containing 8 and 10 mol% V2O5, respectively. Anew compound, 9Nb2O5.2V2O5 crystallized at 525-630°C. It has an orthorhombic unit cell with a = 0.7939 nm, b = 1.731 nm, and c = 1.761 nm. Orthorhombic NbVO5, after crystallization at 420-470°C, decomposed into 9Nb2O5.V2O5 and V2O5, at 760-800°C. ## 1.
