What is The Disney Princess about?
The Disney Princess can be divided into three periods, each corresponding to a distinct era in animation history and a unique vocal style. The operatic princess encompasses the lms produced with hand-drawn animation: Snow White (1937), Cinderella (1950), and Sleeping Beauty (1959). But starting with The Little Mermaid (1989), the princess sang like a Broadway star. Accompanying that shift was a new computer-aided system that eliminated the tradition of female colorists. The Broadway voices expanded the mismatch of the princess-who was as un t for her pedestrian environments as she would be for aristocratic life-to include doubly voiced multicultural characters who revealed the limits of the representation of the princess in the global marketplace. Finally, the recognizable pop voices in the 3D CGI lms Tangled (2010) and Frozen (2013) remind listeners of the cinema's human creators when the evidence of their labor can no longer be found in the image.Unlike the sirens of myth, who heartlessly lure hearty young men to their deaths with the unnatural beauty of their voices, Disney's scantily clad mermaid, Ariel, rescues her sailor from the stormy seas and restores his human strength wi
