What is Application of Edta to Direct Graphite-furnace Atomic Absorption Analysis for Cadmium in Sea Water about?

A method is described for the direct determination of cadmium in undiluted sea water by graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry . The addition of EDTA (1 mg ml-') reduces the temperature of atomization of cadmium to far below that of volatilization of other matrix components. The need for very careful temperature control and accurate background compensation is thus minimized\_ Sea water was analyzed by the method of standard additions. A detection limit of 0.01 tcg l-', a sensitivity of 0.034 pg 1-l and a precision of + 10% at the 0.05 pg i-\* level were obtained for 20-~1 injections\_ Routine trace metal analysis of sea water is commonly carried out by using solvent extraction or coprecipitation preconcentration followed by graphitefurnace atomic absorption spectrometry (a.a.s.). These preliminary techniques require ultrapure reagents, are lengthy and not easily automated; clearly, direct methods of analysis are required. The advantages are as follows: (a) signals are less dependent on the chemical form of the analyte; (b) only small sample volumes are needed; (c) ionic spikes do not have to equilibrate chemically with the sample; (d) much less sample handling is needed; a
