Cesare Lombroso was an Italian criminologist in the late 19th century known for developing theories of biological determinism and criminal anthropology. He studied physical traits and characteristics of prisoners to develop classifications of criminal types including "born criminals" who exhibited signs of atavism and degeneration. His theories were controversial but influential at the time in establishing criminology as a field.
