About this document
Born-Haber Cycle and Ionic Stability by Adi Kurniawan Effendi is a document available to read on EtoBox.
1. The Born-Haber cycle can be used to calculate the lattice energy (U0) and enthalpy of formation (ΔHf) of ionic compounds from their constituent elements. 2. For NaCl, the calculated U0 from the Born-Haber cycle is -787 kJ/mol and the ΔHf is -411 kJ/mol, indicating NaCl forms exothermically. 3. For NaCl2, the calculated U0 is much more negative (-2245 kJ/mol), but experimentally NaCl2 cannot form due to its positive ΔHf (2466 kJ/mol), and it readily decomposes to form NaCl and Cl2.
