God as omnicompetent 1.1 I begin with the assumption that it is a necessary truth that God is all-knowing or omniscient, all-powerful or omnipotent, and all-good or omnibenevolent. That is, it is a necessary truth that a being who is lacking in some power or knowledge, or remiss in some moral respect, is not God. 1.2 In making this assumption, I do not assume that God exists, or that He does not, as this would be problematic in discussing the problem of evil. I assume merely that if God exists, then He is omnicompetent is a necessary truth. 1.3 Some have held that God has necessary omnicompetence. On this view, it is logically impossible that God act wrongly; were God, per impossible, to act wrongly -to do moral evil -then God would cease to exist. Some have held that God is omnicompetent, but lacks necessary omnicompetence; they have held that were God to act wrongly, then He would cease to be God, but would not therefore cease to exist. God exists and deicide is possible is a contradiction on the former view; it is not a contradiction on the latter.
