This paper aims to develop reference models for requirements traceability based on empirical studies of traceability practices in software development organizations. The studies identified a wide range of traceability practices and needs. From these observations, the paper synthesizes reference models comprising the most important types of traceability links for various development tasks. The models capture objects and link types used in current practice and are validated in case studies.
