What is Screenwriting about?

In a  interview for his BBC television drama Professional Foul, Tom Stoppard described his qualms with writing for the camera: 'I miss the writer's ability to control the frame . . . On stage, I have a total picture in my mind about how something is going to look. But when I write for television I'm completely at sea'.  Stoppard did say that he enjoyed being on set to see how the director and crew set up the shots; for Professional Foul, he was involved with pre-shooting work like casting and costuming.  But at that time, just after establishing his presence as one of England's leading playwrights, Stoppard was still a tenderfoot in the world of screenwriting. Today, Stoppard's uncertainty about writing for the camera has been replaced with a measured confidence. After over half a century of writing for television and film, Stoppard realised that his inability to control what the camera captures is an unavoidable part of moviemaking.
