What is Understanding Subcutaneous Tissue about?
The subcutaneous tissue, also known as the hypodermis or superficial fascia, is the deepest layer of skin located just below the dermis and above the deep fascia. It is composed primarily of subcutaneous fat made up of adipocytes that provide cushioning and insulation. Other components include fibers, vessels, nerves and glands that connect the dermis to muscles and regulate temperature. The subcutaneous tissue layer protects underlying structures from damage and plays a role in thermoregulation.
