The dam structure consists of a roller compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dam at the right bank, which is linked with one of the world's highest deformation joint to the very first asphalt core embankment dam (ACED) in Turkey, situated on the left bank (Fig. ). Table provides an overview of the salient features of the dam structure. Geological and geotechnical conditions From a geological point of view, the Lower Kaleköy dam is located at the border of two tectonic plates, the Arabian plate in the south and the Anatolian plate in the north (Fig. ). In late Triassic time, the Neotethys Ocean began to form in between the two plates. Starting from Early Cretaceous, the closing of the ocean took place in three tectonic phases till Late Eocene (35 m. years ago). The contact between the two plates is formed by the Bitlis-Zagros collision zone which is a zone of an intense tectonic mixture of different rocks mainly of volcanic and sedimentary origin. The paleotectonic units in the suture zone are overlain with angular unconformity by the neotectonic units of the Late Miocene period and recent times.
