Amidst all the tonnage of literature which has already burst forth on the anniversary of the Civil War, it is inevitable that some of the small gems will get overlooked by all except the really devoted reader. Such a work is a slender 78-page paperback volume by a Waco-based Air Force colonel, Harold B. Simpson. Labeled Brawling Brass, it is a nugget of gold for the reader interested mainly in personalities of the momentous conflict, but not to the extent of wading through thick, authoritative tomes. Brawling Brass focuses a deft, fast-moving spotlight on six of the classic personal feuds of the war. To keep things even, it treats three for each side. It pulls no punches and spares no heroes. Colonel Simpson concedes that his small volume merely scratches the surface of a very involved controversial subject. But it is aimed at providing insight into how the bickering and quarreling between top generals hurt both sides and left long-festering animousities. Some are still debated. The "Brawls" detailed by Simpson involved: Stonewall Jackson vs. A.P. Hill, Joseph E. Johnston vs. James Longstreet, George G. Meade vs. Daniel E. Sickles, Phillip H. Sheridan vs. Gouverneur K. Warren, John
