The Ghost discus was originally bred in Penang, Malaysia in the early 1990s. It did not stand out visually compared to other discus breeds that were being developed at the time, such as the Blue Diamond and Golden discus. Through selective breeding, the Ghost discus evolved into variants with more intense colors, such as the Golden Cap and Nebula discus, in an attempt to improve its pale appearance.
